Here in Florida, we know a few things about warm weather and time spent enjoying the sun. From boating to fishing, kayaking, sightseeing, and afternoons in the hammock, there’s a lot of fun to look forward to. Take the proper precautions to protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun this summer by following these tips on your next adventure with Peace River Charters.

Check the UV Index

The UV index provides daily forecasts of the expected intensity of ultraviolet (UV) radiation and then forecasts the potential for skin- and eye-damaging radiation. A numbered score of 0-5 indicates low risk, while a score of 6 or greater indicates that significant damage may occur quickly. You can check the UV index on most weather websites.

Sunscreen

Sun damage can happen fast — in as little as 15 minutes! To give your skin the most protection, start with a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays.

Next, take a look at the Sun Protection Factor or SPF. SPF measures how much UVB light a sunscreen can filter out. SPF 30 blocks roughly 97 percent of UVB rays, so using a sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 is recommended.

Apply a base coat to the entire body 20-30 minutes before heading outside, remembering to pay special attention to your face, ears, hands, and feet. You’ll want to reapply every two hours or when you get out of water.

Don’t Forget the Protective Clothing

Choosing suitable garments will enormously impact your exposure! Be sure to wear a hat, sunglasses, and a cover-up or shirt. Keep in mind typical T-shirts have an UPF   (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating under 15. UPF-protective gear offers another level of sun protection and has come a long way. There are many styles to choose from!

Get Shady

Try to alternate your time between sun and shade. Seek shelter, bring an umbrella, or retreat indoors occasionally to give your skin a break. Remember, the sun’s UV rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
