If you’ve never been canoeing before, don’t worry,  you’re not alone! At Peace River Charters, we love introducing guests to the laid-back adventure of paddling Florida’s scenic Peace River. Whether you’re looking to spot wildlife, relax in nature, or just try something new, here’s your quick beginner’s guide to feeling confident in your canoe.

Getting In and Settling In
Start by setting your canoe in shallow water with the front end facing out toward the river. Have one person hold the boat steady while the other steps in, staying low and using the sides for balance. Then switch! Once you’re both in, sit on the seats and keep your weight centered. The person in the back does most of the steering, while the person in the front sets the rhythm with their paddling.

How to Paddle Like a Pro (or Close Enough!)
Canoeing is all about teamwork! Keep your strokes smooth and steady, dipping your paddle fully into the water and pulling it straight back alongside the canoe. To turn, the person in the back can use a “J-stroke” (at the end of the stroke, twist the paddle outward slightly to guide the canoe’s direction). Want to go right? Paddle harder on the left. Want to go left? Paddle harder on the right. Easy!

Quick Tips for a Smooth Ride:

  • Stay balanced- Sudden movements can rock the boat (literally).
  • Work together- Sync your paddling for smoother movement.
  • Bring water and sunscreen- Florida sunshine loves company.
  • Take your time- Canoeing isn’t a race; it’s an adventure!

Getting Out Gracefully
When you reach shore, glide the canoe into shallow water and step out carefully, one person at a time. Use the sides for balance and keep your weight centered until both feet are on solid ground.

Canoeing the Peace River is one of the best ways to soak in Florida’s natural beauty, and, with a little know-how, it’s easy for anyone to enjoy!  Ready to grab a paddle? Book your canoe adventure with Peace River Charters and discover just how peaceful (and fun!) the river can be.
